The BIO International Convention is the largest global event for the biotechnology industry and attracts the biggest names in biotech, offers key networking and partnering opportunities, and provides insights and inspiration on the major trends affecting the industry.
"BIO International is the premier global event for the biotechnology industry", say's Gary Breit, executive director of the TTO". "With more than 1500 companies, 22,000 attendees and representatives from 68 countries there is no better venue to showcase University of Manitoba technologies."
The BIO convention features networking opportunities and includes hundreds of sessions covering biotech trends, policy issues and technological innovations, and the world's largest biotechnology exhibition - the BIO Exhibition.
The TTO has been the source of important platform technologies for companies like Cangene, Tyco, Lorus, YM Biosciences, BASF and Estee Lauder. We encourage companies who are looking to jump-start their product development effort to stop at our booth 3621.
Since 1991, the Association of University Technology Managers (AUTM) has published technology commercialization metrics that span 250 research institutes across North America each year. The recently-released AUTM Annual Survey indicates the University of Manitoba Technology Transfer Office (TTO) is once again one of Canada’s best programs.
"Our faculty-clients and the TTO staff look forward to the publication of these metrics each year," says Gary Breit, executive director of the TTO. "We believe that the metrics speak to the vibrant relationship between our clients and our staff." Breit continues, "We understand that each institution is dealt different research strengths and, different research bases, still, we are pleased that for many, many years, the TTO has been one of Canada’s most productive intellectual asset programs."
"We like to focus on the number of new invention disclosures per million dollars in research, and, of course, the revenue figures ,“ says Dr. Neeraj Visen, technology manager. "We take pride in the relationship between intensive faculty service and the AUTM metrics".

Recently, the TTO secured the services of Ken Roffe (principal, Roffe & Green) to accelerate the commercialization of skin care discovery by Dr. Ken Dolynchuk, Surgery. Roffe & Green is a team of individuals with proven general management, marketing, advertising and product development skills. After just a few months of insightful work by Roffe and his team, the technology was successfully licensed to Estee Lauder, the world’s largest skin care company.
“Our core business is helping companies develop new revenue streams,” says Ken Roffe. “We know how prospective partners think and how to approach decision-makers to attract their attention to compelling business opportunities.”
Roffe & Green has an extensive database of contacts in many industries, especially healthcare, that it targets to find potential licensees. In this case they mined those databases, reaching out to prospective partners with that presented the appropriate profile. With their strong brand name and interest in competing on the basis of superior technology, Estee Lauder is the preferred partner.
“In my roles as president, general manager and directing new products development efforts since 1978, I have grappled with these issues on 4 continents. When the TTO called, we had the requisite experience and did not hesitate to take the challenge,” Roffe said.
“We knew of the fine work of Roffe & Green and they demonstrated that they had a terrific grasp on the underlying science and, on the needs of the marketplace,” says Gary Breit, executive director of the TTO. “We were pleased that they agreed to join our team on this important, platform technology. And, they proved to be a partner who understands the needs of our commercial partners, intellectual property subtleties and current-day commercialization practices. Already, we are looking for new projects on which to collaborate with Roffe & Green.
Hot Technology: Treatment for cardiovascular shock due to sepsis
Worldwide, over 1400 people die of acute septic shock each day, and it is the 13th most common cause of mortality in the USA today. At present there are few treatments for such gravely ill patients. patients must be managed and supported for the many hours before antibiotics can ease an infection. Ground-breaking research by University of Manitoba physician, Dr. Steven Mink, identified a protein mediator of infection-induced hemodynamic collapse. This led to the finding of a small molecule which blocks the protein and restores normal heart rates and blood pressure. This treatment has proven safe and highly effective in a canine model.
This will give emergency doctors a powerful new tool to treat gravely ill patients.
The discovery includes:
-
a protein that decreases myocardial contraction and the adrenergic response to Septic Shock
-
the same protein which causes vasodilation through interactions with smooth muscle in the systemic vasculature
-
Specific agents that inhibit the protein, and dosages and periods of time of administration necessary to prevent or reduce the onset of myocardial dysfunction
and vasodilation in sepsis
